If there is one thing consistent among top performers across all disciplines, it is their constant pursuit of gaining an edge. Whether through a new training technique or an emerging recovery modality, high performers are always looking ahead for what will make them 1% better.

Supplements have become a significant part of that pursuit. In both cognitive and physical domains, supplements can provide the edge elite performers seek. However, according to research, supplements can also contain a lot that they are not looking for.

In 2018, The Journal of the American Medical Association published a study that raised serious concerns about the transparency, efficacy, and safety of supplements on the market (Tucker et al., 2018).

The Prevalence of Mislabeled Supplements

The study analyzed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) database of tainted supplements from 2007 to 2016. Researchers found that 746 dietary supplements were adulterated with unapproved pharmaceutical ingredients. Alarmingly, 20% of these products contained more than one unapproved ingredient (Tucker et al., 2018).

Such adulteration not only misleads consumers but also exposes them to potential health hazards, including adverse reactions and harmful interactions with medications.

The Role of Third-Party Testing

Given these risks, third-party testing has become an essential measure to ensure supplement quality and safety. Independent organizations evaluate supplements to verify they contain the ingredients listed on the label, in the correct amounts, and are free from harmful contaminants.

Organizations such as NSF International offer rigorous testing services. NSF's certification program involves accredited laboratories assessing the contents of supplements to confirm that they align with label claims. This process helps prevent issues related to mislabeling and contamination (NSF International, n.d.).

Benefits of Third-Party Certification

  • Ingredient Verification: Ensures the supplement contains exactly what is stated on the label, with no undeclared substances.

  • Purity Assurance: Confirms the absence of harmful contaminants, such as heavy metals, pesticides, or unapproved pharmaceuticals.

  • Quality Confirmation: Validates that the product is manufactured to high-quality standards, ensuring consistency and reliability.
